Ring In 2017 At Chincoteague’s Pony Island Horseshoe Drop!

December 10th, 2016 by Corey A. Edwards

Chincoteague Island's 2016 Pony Island Horseshoe DropCome to Chincoteague Island this New Year’s Eve and celebrate the passing of 2016 at the annual Pony Island Horseshoe Drop and Costume Promenade!

Chincoteague Island definitely knows how to throw a party and no date makes this more apparent than New Year’s Eve. The annual New Year’s Eve Concert, Pony Island Horseshoe Drop, and Costume Promenade see to that!

Honestly, though summer and the Pony Swims/Roundups see most of our traffic, many will tell you that the off-season is the best time to visit Chincoteague!

Chincotague Island’s New Year’s Eve festivities kick off at 8:30pm this year with the annual New Year’s Eve Concert. The Island Theater will be rocking strong to the sounds of Satisfaction: The International Rolling Stones Show. If you’re a fan of good-time rock and roll and The Rolling Stones, you’ll love Satisfaction. They’re acclaimed as the next best thing to seeing the Stones live, themselves!

Doors will open at 8:30pm for the 9pm show. Tickets are only $30 and can be purchased online. Soft drinks, beer, and wine will be available for purchase at the show. It is recommended that you get your tickets asap because they sell out each year!

As soon as the concert is over, head over to Robert Reed Park for the New Year’s Eve Costume Promenade!

The annual Costume Promenade is a very silly and fun event, whether you’re in costume or not (though it’s a lot more fun if you participate). The Costume Promenade is a judged event with lots of categories and prizes. The theme for this year’s Costume Promenade is “Boots, Chaps & Cowboy Hats!”

All the bufoonery and general silliness of the Costume Promenade winds down as midnight approaches, then it’s time for the big event: the Pony Island Horseshoe Drop!

Chincoteague Island’s New Year’s Eve celebration is so named because the countdown to midnight leads to the descent of a glittering horseshoe. Natch! What better to symbolize the end of one year and the start of another on Chincoteague Island?
