Blue Heron on Chincoteague Island

See beautiful wild waterfowl such as this blue heron when you visit the islands of Assateague and Chincoteague on the Virginia Coast.

It’s not too early to start planning for the big Waterfowl Weekend 2012 on November 22-25. The migration of waterfowl to the Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge is a wonderful natural event worth experiencing for yourself. The 14,000-acre refuge, with its maritime forest, long sandy shore and fresh and saltwater marshes, has long been a much needed stop for birds making their way southward. It’s an event worth celebrating and every year the refuge hosts an Open House featuring special events, lectures, guided walks and more.

From 12 to 3:30 pm on Thanksgiving through Sunday, vehicles are allowed on the normally off-limits Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge Service Road. This makes it easier to view migrating birds and local wildlife. Bring your binoculars and camera to capture the spectacle of thousands of birds converging on Assateague Island for the fall migration.

Snowy egrets, snow geese, herons, double-crested cormorants and other magnificent birds will be passing through. Likewise, large numbers of bird watchers and nature photographers will also be flocking to our area. Book your room now to ensure you have the best Chincoteague lodging during the Assateague Waterfowl Weekend! Our eight individually decorated guest rooms with private baths have everything you need to relax after a day of bird watching. Plus, our Chincoteague B&B is only a short and scenic 15-minute drive from the wildlife refuge!
