The 2013 Plein Air Art Event is back for its tenth year! Once again, more than 40 artists will spend 3 days painting outdoors on Assateague and Chincoteague Islands – and you’re invited!
Choosing their own locations from around the islands, artists from 9 states will pursue their unique styles in the tradition of Plein Air: capturing their chosen scenes out of doors and before the light changes. This racing with the sun and clouds lends a sense of energy and excitement to the work and has long been a component of the Impressionist movement.
“En plein air” is a French phrase meaning “in the open air,” typically used to describe the act of painting outdoors and against the changing light. Artists never ceased sourcing natural light but doing so became a popular movement in the mid 1800’s. The movement was helped on by the introduction of paint in tubes, the box easel, and practicing enthusiasts with names like Pierre-Auguste Renoir, Claude Monet, and Camille Pissarro.
Meet the Artists
Visitors are not only allowed but encouraged to watch the artists work. If you’ve never watched a painting come to life – and even if you have! – doing so is a unique and special opportunity. Feel free to speak to the artists if they encourage it but don’t be surprised if some prefer quiet as a compliment to their labors.
The 2013 Plein Air Art Event culminates Saturday night with a reception, exhibit, and sale of the hundreds of paintings created during the event. Imagine owning a painting you watched come to life as you spoke with the artist!
