August 16th, 2014 by Corey A. Edwards

Chincoteague Chili Chowder Cook Off 2014As we head into the beautiful Chincoteague autumn, a lot of things come to mind, not the least of which is … the annual Chincoteague Island Chili Chowder Cook-Off!

An island favorite, the Chincoteague Island Chili Chowder Cook-Off is fun, sun, food, music, crafts, contests, and more. Hosted by the Chincoteague Volunteer Fire Company, the 2014 Chincoteague Island Chili Chowder Cook-Off offers chowder and chili aficionados from around the area a chance to compete – and taste! – delicious variations of chili and chowder. You’ll see numerous examples of these dishes, prepared under cover, from secret recipes handed down generation by generation, as well as brand new twists on these classic, comfort-food favorites.

Despite the name, this entertaining event is not all just chili and chowder. Alongside these two, presiding dishes, you will also find hot dogs, hamburgers, ice-cream, and delicious beverages to slake your thirst. Nor is the cook-off just about food!

The 2014 Chincoteague Island Chili Chowder Cook-Off also includes live music, an arts and crafts show with fun activities, and new this year, the Chincoteague Island Classic Car Show! Arrive in your classic car and join in the fun! The first 25 cars to register will receive a commemorative dash plaque and all participating cars will be judged on a number of different points to be eligible for one or more of 10 available trophies, 8 of which are people’s choice.

Speaking of judging, you do not want to miss the highlight of the Chincoteague Island Chili Chowder Cook-Off: the Little Miss Chili Pepper and Mr. Hot Stuff competition. Child contestants from the area, between the ages of 4 and 7, will do their best to woo the crowd and judges for the coveted titles – always an irresistible crowd pleaser. This event takes place at 11am, before the start of the Chili Chowder Cook-Off, so be sure to arrive early!
