There’s nowhere quite as quaint and peaceful as Chincoteague Island – which makes it even more surprising that, just ten minutes away, they’re launching rockets into space at the Wallops Flight Facility NASA Visitor Center – and you can watch for free!
Yes, you read that correctly: The NASA Visitor Center at Wallops Flight Facility is just a short drive form the quiet beauty of Chincoteague and Assateague Islands.
One of the oldest rocket-launch sites in the world – it opened in 1945 – Wallops Flight Facility is fully a active facility, regularly hosting space launches, among other projects, as well as running a world-class visitors center with great exhibits, scheduled events, special programs – and free admission!
Beyond live space launches, the NASA Visitor Center at Wallops Flight Facility has a number of fascinating exhibits. Check out the interactive Science On a Sphere® Theater where you will see computer animations of Earth’s atmospheric storms and changing ocean temperatures projected onto a six foot diameter globe. Visit the Magic Planet exhibit to delve deep into our solar system with its interactive touch screen.
If you do want to catch a live launch (and who wouldn’t?) check Nasa’s launch schedule for an upcoming launch at the facility, then coordinate your visit to be here when it happens! You can view a launch in style in the Wallops Flight Facility’s multi-purpose auditorium with live camera feeds that take you inside the action at the launch pad or you can watch from special areas outside.
The Wallops Flight Facility’s multi-purpose auditorium is a 135 seat, high-tech auditorium unlike any other that is worth a visit whether there is a scheduled launch or not! With a nine-television, high-definition flat-screen display, state-of-the-art lighting and sound equipment, plus some awesome, NASA space decor, it’s a must-see!
