Spring Pony Roundup 2015

It’s almost time for Chincoteague’s Saltwater Cowboys to collect the wild ponies of Assateague Island for their annual veterinary check: the 2015 Spring Pony Roundup! Will you be here to see it?

Chincoteague’s 2015 Spring Pony Roundup is scheduled for April 10th and 11th this year. A set of annual veterinary checks to assess the general health of the herd, especially that of any new foals, the pony roundups are also a chance for you to come and watch!

There are two different herds of wild horses on Assateague Island and the Saltwater Cowboys of the Chincoteague Volunteer Fire Company check them separately. This year, the southern herd will be rounded up on the afternoon of Friday, April 10th, between 4 and 4:30pm, and the northern herd on the morning of Saturday, April 11th, around 7:30am.

Of these two spring pony roundups, the one that occurs on Friday at the southern pen is the most accessible of the two to the public. This roundup only takes a few hours to accomplish as the southern herd is smaller and easier to round-up. The Friday roundup occurs at the south pen, located on the road going out to the beach on Assateague. There is plenty of parking here as well as easy access to watch the action.

Spring Pony Roundup 2015The northern herd’s Saturday morning roundup takes place up the service road to the other end of the herd lands on Assateague, a three mile, 45 minute walk – one way. The Saturday roundup takes around 5 to 6 hours, due to both the walk, the amount of ponies in the northern herd, and the broader acreage allotted them.

The Chincoteague Pony Swim is a far more famous event than the spring pony roundup, of course. These lesser known fall and spring pony roundups are less dramatic, with no swim to and from Assateague and, consequently, much smaller crowds on hand but they’re still an exciting opportunity to come and see the wild ponies of Assateague Island up close – not to mention any of the new foals spring has brought!
