2015 will very soon be making way for 2016 and one of the best ways to celebrate this yearly transition is by treating yourself to a Virginia Coast holiday getaway on Chincoteague Island.
Here on Chincoteague, we know how to do New Year’s Eve right, with the annual concert at the Island Theatre and the Pony Island Horseshoe Drop and Costume Promenade at midnight – followed the very next day by the Chincoteague Island Polar Pony Plunge.
Chincoteague Island is known for its swimming wild ponies but in this particular instance, the pony in question could be you. Please allow me to explain …
The Chincoteague Island Polar Pony Plunge involves collecting on the beach at Assateague Island on the afternoon of New Year’s Day and, at the appointed time, dashing into the frigid surf. Yes – that’s right: running straight into the freezing Atlantic as if that wasn’t a totally bonkers thing to do.
Many folks choose to dress in wacky costumery before leaping pell-mell into the less than forgiving waters of the Atlantic – others aren’t as fussy and just throw themselves into the waves wearing any old thing. Some prefer to stand on the beach and serve as observers. These people are referred to as “the sane” … but don’t know what they are missing.
Polar Pony Plunge 2016 is set for New Year’s Day at 1:16pm (do you see what they did there?). There will be a costume contest and an opportunity to purchase a 2016 Polar Pony Plunge t-shirt.
Attendees don’t need a costume to enter the water, don’t have to enter the water to be part of the Polar Pony Plunge Costume Contest, and don’t have to do either to purchase a 2016 Polar Pony Plunge t-shirt. All you have to do is show up!
The temperature of the water will be tested prior to the Polar Pony Plunge to make sure it is at least -10 degrees Fahrenheit or warmer. Any colder and the plunge will be restricted to singular body parts, such as a foot or arm, rather than your whole body. Fun is fun … but hypothermia is not fun.
So come on out to Chincoteague Island this New Years and celebrate with us at the 2016 Polar Pony Plunge!
