Chincoteague Island is famous for many things but did you know you could view a NASA rocket launch from our shores? We’ve permanent front-row tickets to the NASA Flight Facility on neighboring Wallops Island!
You’d think having herds of wild ponies, sought after oysters, a historic lighthouse, and miles of pristine beaches would be enough for any destination but no. On top of everything else, NASA’s Wallops Flight Facility is only 5 miles away from Chincoteague, as the crow flies. Consequently, Chincoteague Island serves as an excellent vantage point to view a NASA rocket launch.
A good spot to view a NASA rocket launch from is Robert Reed waterfront park, in between Church and Mumford streets, on Main. Another popular location is the Curtis Merritt harbor at the south Main Street. The bike trail adjacent to the Assateague bridge is also popular.
If you don’t mind leaving the tranquil beauty of Chincoteague Island, you can also watch live rocket launches from the NASA Wallops Visitor Center. Wallops Visitor Center is less than a half-hour’s drive from our Chincoteague Island B&B – and less than a mile from the launch pad!
You can view launches two different ways at Wallops Visitor Center. Outside, they have special areas set aside just for viewing launches. You can also watch from the comfort of the visitor center’s state-of-the-art auditorium. Here, live camera feeds displayed on a huge, hi-def, flat screen display take you inside the action at the launch pad.
Wallops Visitor Center is worth a visit even if there aren’t any launches scheduled. Wallops Flight Facility is one of the oldest launch sites on Earth and the visitor center details this history with fascinating, interactive exhibits. The Center also offers tours and a gift shop.
