Things To Do During Chincoteague Pony Swim 2018

June 15th, 2018 by Corey A. Edwards

Chincoteague Pony Swim 2018Chincoteague Pony Swim 2018 is scheduled for Wednesday, July 25th, this year, with a week of pony related activities planned around the swim. The annual pony swim is undoubtedly the most famous aspect of Chincoteague Island – but it’s hardly the only thing to do here!

Chincoteague Pony Swim helps to make July – already awash with events and activities – the island’s most busy and popular month. There is the 4th of July, the Volunteer’ Fireman’s Carnival, and Pony Swim week (July 21-27).

Pony Swim week offers plenty to see and do, what with the two swims, the roundups, and auction. But don’t make the mistake of thinking that the wild ponies of Assateague Island are the only things to see on Chincoteague Island!

Chincoteague Island offers a host of activities for everyone, all year ’round.

Birders, shutterbugs, and nature lovers will swoon when they discover Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge. The Refuge is one of the most visited refuges in the country, with more than 14,000 acres of beach, dunes, marsh, and maritime forest. The refuge is home to Chincoteague’s wild ponies – and a cornucopia of waterfowl. Several trails allow for easy exploring of both the wilds and the wildlife.

Assateague Island is also home to the historic Assateague Lighthouse. Assateague Lighthouse is one of less than 20 lighthouses of its kind still in use on the Eastern Seaboard. You can tour the 1867 light on weekend, April through November, 9am to 3pm.

Both Chincoteague and Assateague Island are nice and flat, making them great for bike riding. Explore the island and beaches with ease on a bike. Island Manor House even has some bikes and beach gear guests can use during their stay!

You’re on an island, so you may as well enjoy the water – why should the swimming ponies get all the fun? Chincoteague offers plenty of ways to get out on the water. A number of outfitters offer kayaks, canoes, boats, and even jet skis. Chincoteague kayak tours and boat tours are also available.

Fishing, clamming, and crabbing are a big draw to the island and another great way to enjoy the water. Deep sea fishing, bay fishing cruises, surf fishing, and pier fishing are all available. You can also skip the whole fishing part and simply enjoy fresh seafood at one of our many restaurants or stands. Fresh raw oysters, anyone?

Hoping for a little retail therapy? Chincoteague can help! Our island offers a variety of quaint antique shops, galleries, gift shops, and don’t for get the Chincoteague Island Farmer’s Market!

The local Y.M.C.A. can provide that gym workout you’re after, and there’s a 9-hole, par-3 golf course just 20 minutes away. For out of this world entertainment, you can’t beat the NASA Flight Facility on Wallops Island. Not only can you visit the facility, if your timing is right, you can even witness a rocket launch!
