Beach vacations are among the best vacations around. The sight and sound of the ocean compels us to just relax, take it all in and have a ball. The surf, sun, and sand of the beach are the perfect combination for relaxation and recreation – but not all beaches are equal.
Chincoteague’s beach, located on the Assateague Island National Seashore, is one of the Atlantic Coast’s most gorgeous and pristine beaches.
Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge Beach
Assateague Island is a long, narrow barrier island located just off the Maryland and Virginia coasts. Chincoteague lies between the coast and Assateague with easy access to both by road. The Virginia side of Assateague is home to the wildlife refuge and National Seashore. The beach is undeveloped with miles of white sand to enjoy.
The recreational portion of the beach is a year-round, nature-lover’s paradise. This section of the beach is managed by the National Park Service, with lifeguards during the summer. Swimmers, sunbathers, birders, photographers, beachcombers, and outdoor enthusiasts of all stripes love this beach.
Those looking for quieter areas will enjoy exploring Wild Beach, which stretches north from the “D” Dike area on Assateague to the Virginia-Maryland border. The farther north you hike, the fewer people you’ll see – and vehicles are not permitted.
Assateague Island offers more than just sandy shores. There are hiking trails, the historic Assateague lighthouse, refuge centers with interesting exhibits, and let’s not forget the world famous wild ponies of Chincoteague! Yep, they live here on the island, too, in two separate herds.
Getting to Chincoteague Beach
Reaching the beach on Assateague from our Chincoteague bed and breakfast is a snap.
Simply turn right from our inn on Main Street to Chincoteague Road/Maddox Boulevard. Take a right on Maddox Boulevard and stay on it until it reaches the bridge to Assateague. Here, Maddox Boulevard becomes Beach Access Road and, yes: just keep driving. You’re almost there.
The drive to the beach from town takes ten minutes or less. In fact, it is so close, that many choose to bike, instead. The Island Manor has bikes and other beach gear for you to use during your Chincoteague getaway. Backpack loungers with rucksacks, beach chairs, towels, umbrellas, boogie boards, shovels and pails, frisbees, and more.
Pack a lunch, some water to stay hydrated, beach gear, and off you go! Making the most of your Chincoteague beach vacation.
We hope to see you soon!
