You’d think a small town on a small island would just roll-up the sidewalks once “tourist season” ends but not Chincoteague Island! Sure, we’re a lot quieter and less crowded once vacation season ends but frankly, that’s part of the reason the “off-season” may be the best time to visit! It’s still beautiful here and there’s still plenty to do and see, especially around the holidays.
A Chincoteague New Year’s Eve, for example, is chock-full of that unique island spirit and fun Chincoteague Island is so well known for.
It starts off with the Annual New Year’s Eve Concert at the Island Theatre. Bill Toms and Hard Rain are back this year with their hard mix of rock, rhythm and blues, soul, and folk. Bill Toms played lead guitar and sang back-up for Pittsburgh’s Joe Grushecky and the Houserockers for 19 years and has toured the US and Europe repeatedly, opening for artists like The Band, Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen, Little Feat, and Stevie Ray Vaughn, so you know you’re in for a great show.
After the concert, quick change into your costume (if you want … or haven’t already!) and head down to the Robert Reed Downtown Park for the Pony Island Horseshoe Drop and Costume Promenade!
The Costume Promenade is an annual, silly spectacle that includes costume contests in a variety of categories and, yes, there are prizes! This year’s Costume Promenade theme is Saltwater Cowboys and Seaside Angels. Whether you intend to participate in the shenanigans or not, bring a camera and be prepared for a hilarious time that will includes music and dancing – or something approximating that, anyway.
At midnight comes the countdown and the Pony Island Horseshoe Drop. That’s right, who needs a glittery ball when you have a sparkly horseshoe? Count down to 2015 and give your loved ones a big squeeze!
Finally, if you’re feeling up to it – hey, New Year’s! – the first day of the new year brings … the 2015 Polar Pony Plunge! What better way to celebrate the new year than by throwing yourself into the ice-cold waters of the Atlantic? If you’re still in your costume from the night before, all the better because there are more prizes for crazy costumes and a 2015 Polar Pony Plunge t-shirt you can purchase as proof of your insanity.
and THAT is a Chincoteague New Year’s Eve.
