Chincoteague New Year’s Eve – Pony Island Horseshoe Drop

December 7, 2018 by Corey A. Edwards

Chincoteague New Years Eve 2018Hard as it may be to believe, the last day of the year is less than a month away and that means the annual Pony Island Horseshoe Drop. Come join us this year as we celebrate Chincoteague New Year’s Eve 2018!

We know how to have fun here on Chincoteague Island, a fact that is doubly true on New Year’s Eve. Instead of clustering around a television set to watch the ball drop in Times Square, we dress up in crazy costumes and watch the horseshoe drop in Robert Reed Waterfront Park!

Relax On A Chincoteague Island Holiday Getaway!

November 10, 2018 by Corey A. Edwards

Chincoteague Island Holiday Getaway!Come to Virginia’s eastern shore this holiday season for a Chincoteague Island holiday getaway! It’s sunny, cool and there’s plenty to do. In fact, the calendar is so crowded with special events you’d think it was summer!

After summer, fall may be the next best season to visit Chincoteague. Our skies stay primarily sunny, with an average daily temperature of 50 degrees. While we do see more visitors during the spring and summer seasons, that’s a big part of the attraction of the “off-season” – smaller crowds!

Chincoteague is home to unique shops and galleries that are perfect for holiday shopping. You’ll also find some of the finest, freshest seafood on the coast.

Further, just because it’s the “off-season” doesn’t mean we’re rolled up and stored away ’til next spring. Chincoteague is our home year-round and we have a lot of fun, especially during the holiday season.

Make A Splash at the 2016 Polar Pony Plunge

December 4, 2015 by Corey A. Edwards

Chincoteague Island Polar Pony Plunge 2016There are lots of great ways to celebrate the first day of the new year – but few are as invigorating and fun as Chincoteague Island’s annual Polar Pony Plunge!

2015 will very soon be making way for 2016 and one of the best ways to celebrate this yearly transition is by treating yourself to a Virginia Coast holiday getaway on Chincoteague Island.

Here on Chincoteague, we know how to do New Year’s Eve right, with the annual concert at the Island Theatre and the Pony Island Horseshoe Drop and Costume Promenade at midnight – followed the very next day by the Chincoteague Island Polar Pony Plunge.

Chincoteague Island is known for its swimming wild ponies but in this particular instance, the pony in question could be you. Please allow me to explain …

A Chincoteague New Year’s Eve

December 13, 2014 by Corey A. Edwards

Chincoteague New Year's Eve

No Chincoteague Island New Year’s Eve
is complete without the
Pony Island Horseshoe Drop!

There’s no place like Virginia’s Chincoteague Island for unique and beautiful vacations – and that doesn’t end with summer. A Chincoteague New Year’s Eve is a great, one-of-a-kind way to start the new year!

You’d think a small town on a small island would just roll-up the sidewalks once “tourist season” ends but not Chincoteague Island! Sure, we’re a lot quieter and less crowded once vacation season ends but frankly, that’s part of the reason the “off-season” may be the best time to visit! It’s still beautiful here and there’s still plenty to do and see, especially around the holidays.

A Chincoteague New Year’s Eve, for example, is chock-full of that unique island spirit and fun Chincoteague Island is so well known for.

It starts off with the Annual New Year’s Eve Concert at the Island Theatre. Bill Toms and Hard Rain are back this year with their hard mix of rock, rhythm and blues, soul, and folk. Bill Toms played lead guitar and sang back-up for Pittsburgh’s Joe Grushecky and the Houserockers for 19 years and has toured the US and Europe repeatedly, opening for artists like The Band, Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen, Little Feat, and Stevie Ray Vaughn, so you know you’re in for a great show.

After the concert, quick change into your costume (if you want … or haven’t already!) and head down to the Robert Reed Downtown Park for the Pony Island Horseshoe Drop and Costume Promenade!

The Costume Promenade is an annual, silly spectacle that includes costume contests in a variety of categories and, yes, there are prizes! This year’s Costume Promenade theme is Saltwater Cowboys and Seaside Angels. Whether you intend to participate in the shenanigans or not, bring a camera and be prepared for a hilarious time that will includes music and dancing – or something approximating that, anyway.

At midnight comes the countdown and the Pony Island Horseshoe Drop. That’s right, who needs a glittery ball when you have a sparkly horseshoe? Count down to 2015 and give your loved ones a big squeeze!

Finally, if you’re feeling up to it – hey, New Year’s! – the first day of the new year brings … the 2015 Polar Pony Plunge! What better way to celebrate the new year than by throwing yourself into the ice-cold waters of the Atlantic? If you’re still in your costume from the night before, all the better because there are more prizes for crazy costumes and a 2015 Polar Pony Plunge t-shirt you can purchase as proof of your insanity.

and THAT is a Chincoteague New Year’s Eve.

Take the 2014 Polar Pony Plunge on Chincoteage Island!

December 16, 2013 by Corey A. Edwards

As with most smaller, island communities, we like to do things our own way here on Chincoteage Island. The Pony Island Horseshoe Drop & Costume Promenade on New Year’s Eve is an example of that and another is the New Year’s Day, Polar Pony Plunge on Chincoteage Island.

Come New Year’s Day afternoon – January 1st, 2014 at 1:14pm (get it?) – you are given the opportunity to display your intestinal fortitude by taking the Polar Pony Plunge. That or you can display your sanity and enthusiasm for those crazy enough to take the aforementioned Polar Pony Plunge.

New Year’s Eve Getaway on Chincoteague Island

December 4, 2012 by islandmanor

Join us for New Years Eve on Chincoteague! While many tourists chose to come to the island during the summer, the winter holds unique charms for those that enjoy a quieter, more serene beach experience. However, that doesn’t mean everything about Chincoteague island is quiet in the winter! Our New Year’e Eve celebration 2012 is not-to-be-missed!

The fun starts at 10:00 p.m. in the Robert Reed Downtown Park. Our signature event, The Pony Island Horseshoe Drop, is a celebration that culminates in a promenade of crazy costumes just before counting down to the stroke of midnight. That’s when the illuminated horseshoe drops in time to ring in the New Year! It’s not Swarovski Crystal…but it does sparkle!

Wear your favorite costume or just be a spectator (but it’s a lot more fun in costume! We might have a couple to share). This year’s theme is COWBOYS & ALIENS! While the theme may seem random, it’s actually a nod to Chincoteague heritage. First, we

are home to the World Famous Saltwater Cowboys. Secondly, we are just a lassos throw away from the original USA Space Port at Wallops Island. So if you show up looking like a cow poke, an alien, or whatever, don’t worry, it’s all good here on the island!

To become totally immersed in the oddest of silly visual spectacles, you should head for the Downtown Waterfront Park by 10 p.m. Prizes will be awarded in various categories. Bring your camera to capture the shenanigans, dress warm (wear a hat and gloves for sure) and leave the stilettos at home (that was last year’s New Years). Comfortable shoes are a must so you can shimmy and dance the last night of the year away. Most importantly; bring YOUR family and friends with you to enjoy the grand fun that is Chincoteague!

We still have rooms in our Chincoteague bed and breakfast available for the holidays. Book now for great off-season rates!
